The line about being forty-two and still sitting at a red light that went red at sixteen stopped me. That’s such a precise way to describe how old wounds don’t actually age at the same rate we do.
I’m curious about the seven-second scale you mentioned, the moment the urge to quit shows up “while you’re not looking.” That feels like the real unlock in this framework, more than the seven-year mapping itself. Most of us can name our big cycles in hindsight; it’s the tiny, repeated moment of almost giving up that’s harder to catch in real time. Looking forward to Cycle 2.
Thank you for reading it this closely @The diary of a 30-Something . You’ve picked up on the part I find most interesting too — the big cycles are usually obvious in hindsight, but much harder to recognise while you’re actually moving through them. The real leverage is often in that tiny moment before the pattern repeats.
Those seven-second moments are incredibly powerful because they create a split in the path. A tiny decision can send you down a completely different timeline.
Sometimes it’s dramatic — someone asks you to marry them and you answer yes or no. Sometimes it’s quieter - you decide whether to stay, leave, speak, quit, try again, get on the plane, tear up the return ticket.
That’s where I think self-mastery actually lives. Not in becoming a completely different person, but in learning to recognise the moment you’re about to hand the wheel back to an old pattern and choosing a different path instead.
I’m genuinely glad that stood out to you. And thank you for being the first person to properly get into the conversation with me here, it means a lot. 🫶
That reframe, self-mastery as recognizing the handoff moment, not becoming someone new, is going to stick with me. Thank you for taking the time to write all that out. Really looking forward to Cycle 2.
Your timing is perfect 😄 Cycle 2 is actually dropping tomorrow (Thursday).
I’ve been deep in writing it this week, and this exchange has stayed with me while I’ve been working on it.
The idea I keep coming back to is that yes, the big cycles are usually obvious in hindsight — but the real work is catching the tiny handoff moment before the old pattern takes over again, and noticing where the “connection points” are linking the different cycles of our lives.
I have a feeling you’ll have thoughts on where I take it next. Would genuinely love to hear what it brings up for you when it lands.
